Staff Development Lesson: Distance Education Module Version
Practicum in School Library Media
David Harvey
Georgia Southern University
Spring 2012
Rationale: Implementing instructional technologies and web 2.0 resources into the nation’s schools is becoming more and more of a priority. Teacher Librarians and Teachers should encourage each other to continually develop new ways to integrate technology into their classrooms and Media Centers.
The goals of this staff development lesson are simply to share a few ways of integrating technology with fellow teachers.
You may want to have your cell phone handy.
Educators understand:
· It is important to be lifelong learners
· Staff development sessions can be just another way of staying current with the latest educational technology
This is just one of the countless sites that may help educators supplement their teaching toolbox by exploring the following:
· What are some convenient and effective ways of integrating free and web-based technology into my classroom?
· What are some ways of enhancing our abilities as educators to engage our students with the curriculum?
· What are some ways of making curriculum content more accessible, portable, convenient, and attractive to students?
Educators will be informed about:
· Learningonthego.weebly.com
· The month of April being School Library Month
· QR codes, how easy they are to create, and some ways they can use them to generate interest in curriculum content that may not be inherently interesting to students at first
· A sample history lesson utilizing QR codes
· The benefit of using sites other than youtube in their lessons (i.e. www.vimeo.com or www.teachertube.com
Upon completion of this distance learning module, educators will be able to:
· Create their own website on www.weebly.com
· Put a youtube video (blocked by the county firewall) on vimeo (not blocked) for educational purposes
· Created QR codes that will prompt students to go to educational websites when scanned.
· Create a QR scavenger hunt by taping QR codes on hallway walls
· Use the mimio pad and software for handwriting recognition, the reveal software tool, and to make annotations on webpages
Now for the Module:
Thank you so much taking time out of your busy schedules to learn about or be reminded of some ways that technology can assist in learning.
1. Please go to a website I developed called learningonthego.weebly.com
2. Please look over the links- be sure to take note that April is School Library Month and that these links will continue to be updated in the future.
3. Please notice the large square design at the bottom of the page. That is a Quick Response Code, usually referred to as a QR code. They can communicate a lot more data when scanned than a regular barcode. I apologize if that is too obvious of a statement. If you have not run into these codes in everyday life yet, you probably will soon.
4. QR codes can be used in instruction to really utilize something that the kids have with them all the time- their cell phones.
5. Please click on the history lesson tab on learningonthego.weebly.com
a. Please note that public/ college/ university libraries are using QR codes and please be aware how cell phones are big on college campuses with apps for information and online learning.
b. With the new rules for allowing cell phone use before school/ during lunch/ and after school, students can use them in the library to look up information. This website will be a physical display in the library that the kids can use with their phones.
5. Please scan one of the QR codes now with your cell phone. You can scan the screen or click the link. OOPS! Youtube doesn’t work. What do we do?
6. Vimeo is not blocked at LFO, so we convert the videos to vimeo. Go to learningonthego.weebly.com and see the link to the website you can use to download youtube videos.
7. Please try to start a webpage on www.weebly.com. I think you will be impressed with how easy it is.
8. Please click here to see a video about the mimio pad.
Thank you so very much for your time and your willingness to let me share some great tools to enhance learning.
